7 Early Signs of
Hepatitis C

You may not have any symptoms at all, but that doesn’t mean you don’t have the virus. In fact, most people who have Hepatitis C don’t even know it until they have serious liver damage that requires medical treatment or surgery.

So if you think you might be at risk, it’s important to get tested and diagnosed as soon as possible.

Fatigue is one of the most common early signs. Many people with hepatitis C just feel exhausted, even after a good night’s sleep. This could be because their body is working hard to fight off something it doesn’t even know about yet. Others report feeling like they have a flu or cold, but never quite get over it.

If you feel very tired or weak, you may have hepatitis C. This could be a sign that your body isn’t getting enough nutrients and vitamins. You may also feel sick to your stomach or vomit. Weakness can come on quickly over several days—or last for months. Weakness is not common with hepatitis C, but it should make you think about getting tested as soon as possible!

Hepatitis-C-Testing: When do I need to get tested?

One early sign of hepatitis C is nausea. This feeling may begin a few weeks after exposure to hepatitis and is often accompanied by vomiting. These symptoms are caused by inflammation in your liver. They’re typically mild and can last for up to two months without treatment, but even if you feel better, don’t consider yourself out of danger just yet; your liver still needs some time to heal itself.

Lymph nodes are small glands that filter and trap germs before they enter your blood. An inguinal lymph node, one of these nodes is located in your groin and can be swollen when you have hepatitis C. Other common symptoms are: pain on one side of your stomach; joint pain or muscle aches; fatigue; nausea or vomiting; and loss of appetite.

Loss of appetite is one of 7 early signs that you may have Hepatitis C. Other symptoms include loss of energy, depression, and nausea. While these symptoms aren’t specific to hepatitis—people with other conditions can have them as well—they can indicate HCV infection and should not be ignored. If you experience two or more symptoms for six months or longer, contact your doctor and request a blood test.

One early sign of hepatitis C is jaundice, which can occur within a month or two after exposure. The virus, also known as HCV, attacks your liver’s cells and eventually causes them to stop working properly. When these cells break down in your body, they release a yellow pigment called bilirubin. This pigment builds up in your blood, turning it a darker color—aka jaundice.

The most common sign of hepatitis C is abdominal pain that ranges from mild to severe. It’s usually in your upper abdomen and moves around. The pain may feel like gas or bloating, or you may describe it as aching, cramping, or pulling. You can also have discomfort or swelling in your lower abdomen.
